Eye boogers happen. So do sand, pollen and the occasional face-first dive into a bush after seeing a lizard or squirrel... Here's how to pick the right eye wash for the job.
What is the best eye wash for dogs and cats?
For everyday cleaning, use a gentle, non-medicated wash made for pets. Skout's Honor HydroClear™ Eye Wash flushes out gunk, debris, allergens and post-swim irritation, and its hyaluronic acid adds hydration. It's safe for dogs and cats, made for daily use, and helps reduce the appearance of tear stains.
"Eye wash" covers several kinds of products that do different jobs. Here's how they compare:
| Type | What it does | Best for | Rx needed? |
|---|---|---|---|
| HydroClear™ Eye Wash (hyaluronic acid) | Flushes debris and adds hydration | Daily cleaning, post-swim, tear-stain areas | No |
| Sterile saline | Flushes debris | Rinsing out dust or a small particle | No |
| Boric acid–based pet eyewash | Flushes debris with a buffered solution | Occasional flushing | Varies by product |
| Tear-stain wipes | Cleans fur around the eye | Cosmetic cleanup of stained fur | No |
| Lubricating drops / artificial tears | Supplements the tear film | Dry eye diagnosed by a vet | Usually vet-recommended |
| Medicated drops (antibiotic, steroid) | Treats infection or inflammation | Diagnosed eye conditions | Yes |
| Human redness-relief drops (e.g., Visine) | Shrinks blood vessels | Never for pets | Don't use |
What's the difference between a pet eye wash and saline?
Both flush debris out. The difference is what's left behind. Plain saline rinses and evaporates. HydroClear™ Eye Wash starts from the same base (filtered water, sodium chloride and buffers) and adds sodium hyaluronate, a form of hyaluronic acid that holds moisture at the surface.
Sterile saline: The AKC says plain, additive-free sterile saline is safe for flushing minor irritation from dust or small particles (AKC). Its limits:
- It flushes but doesn't hydrate.
- Pet Poison Helpline warns that mixing homemade saline to the right concentration "can be tricky" (Pet Poison Helpline).
- Some single-use sterile products should be thrown out soon after opening. One OTC pet eyewash, for example, is sterile only for about 6 hours once opened (VetRxDirect).
HydroClear™ Eye Wash ingredients: filtered water, sodium chloride, disodium phosphate, sodium hyaluronate, disodium EDTA, sodium phosphate, potassium chloride.
What does hyaluronic acid do in an eye wash?
Hyaluronic acid draws in water and holds it in place. That's why it's a staple in human skin care and eye care. In HydroClear™ Eye Wash, it adds hydration while the wash clears away gunk. Hyaluronic acid can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water.
Veterinary researchers are studying it too. A 2023 pilot study in the Irish Veterinary Journal tested a hyaluronate-based solution in 19 dogs with diagnosed dry eye. It found significant gains in tear production and a roughly 55% reduction in clinical scores after 30 days. The study was small and uncontrolled, was funded by that product's manufacturer, and its authors call for larger trials (Gard et al., 2023).
Important: HydroClear™ is a non-medicated, daily-use wash, not a dry-eye treatment. Dry eye needs a vet diagnosis and a vet's plan.
Can I use human eye drops on my dog?
No. Stick to products made for pets, like HydroClear™ Eye Wash, which is formulated and labeled for dogs and cats.
Pet Poison Helpline warns against using Visine on dogs. Its active ingredient, tetrahydrozoline, "has not been tested in detail on animals," and redness-relief drops can mask problems while putting your pet "at risk of further eye injury" (Pet Poison Helpline). If you've already used them, call Pet Poison Helpline at (855) 764-7661.
The AKC also says to skip human products with additives, alcohol-based products, hydrogen peroxide, essential oils, soaps and homemade remedies (AKC).
How do I get rid of my dog's tear stains?
Start with a daily rinse. HydroClear™ Eye Wash clears away eye gunk and helps reduce the appearance of tear stains with regular use. Follow up by wiping the fur around the eyes with HydroClear™ Eye, Ear & Nose Wipes.
The reddish-brown color comes from porphyrin, a pigment in tears. It shows up most on light-coated dogs (PetMD). Heavy tearing (epiphora) is more common in:
- Flat-faced breeds: Shih Tzus, Pekingese, Boxers, Bulldogs
- Light-coated breeds: Maltese, Poodles
Tear-stain tip: The AKC recommends keeping the hair around the eyes short with blunt-nose scissors to cut down on irritation and buildup (AKC).
Sudden or heavy tearing can signal allergies, eyelash problems, a blocked tear duct or an eye injury, so mention it to your vet (PetMD).
How do I use eye wash on my dog?
HydroClear™ Eye Wash has two modes. For daily maintenance, apply 2–3 drops per eye once a day. To flush, squeeze a steady stream into the eye until debris clears.
- Set the mood. Treats in pocket. Calm voice. Maybe a second human.
- Tilt the head up gently and apply the drops or stream. Don't touch the tip to the eye.
- Let them blink. This spreads the wash.
- Wipe outward toward the ear with a soft cloth or cotton ball, using a fresh one for each eye (AKC).
- Soften crusts first. Hold a damp cloth over them for a moment rather than scrubbing.
- Reward. Eye time should end with a snack.
Is eye wash safe for cats?
Yes, if it's labeled for cats. HydroClear™ Eye Wash is safe for both dogs and cats when used as directed. Go slow: cats tend to prefer the drop method to a full flush- realistically they prefer to be left alone but sometimes it just has to be done.
When should I take my pet to the vet for an eye problem?
Eye problems can get worse fast, so call your vet if you see any of the following. No wash replaces a diagnosis.
- Thick, yellow, green or foul-smelling discharge
- Redness or swelling
- Squinting, excessive blinking, or keeping an eye closed
- Pawing or rubbing at the face
- Cloudiness or a visible injury
- Irritation that doesn't improve after a rinse

FAQ
Can I use eye wash on my dog every day?
